Her words were halting and soft spoken but Sam heard every one of them. And they were nails pounding into his soul.

Lola continued, “Then just when you think you’ve closed the door on the pain you’ve felt in the past…something, a sound or a scent brings it right back to you. It’s so lonely in that dark place, so lonely—you want to give up, curl up in a corner of your mind and just die.”

Sam closed his eyes and let her words sink in. He opened them to say something but the sofa was empty. He hadn’t heard her leave but she was gone. Sam turned to the dog, “Fine help you are.”

The dog cocked his head and whined at his master.

Sam reached out and rubbed his ears.

Hours later, Sam finally moved. He looked at his bedroom door for a moment then got up and walked down the hall to Lola’s room.

She was in bed but there was a candle lit on her dresser.

When he came into the room, she turned her head and caught his eye. Then without a word, she pulled back the covers for him.

He took off his jeans and crawled into her bed. Laying on his back, Lola cuddled up to him and closed her eyes.

Sam laid staring at the ceiling for a long time then when he heard padded footsteps coming down the hall, he knew the dog had joined them. He waited for a moment to listen as the dog laid down beside the bed, then peace settled on him, he closed his eyes and fell asleep with her by his side.
